What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are an application of mild acids used to achieve light to medium depth exfoliation. This form of exfoliation helps to brighten, tone, and smooth the skin by stimulating skin cell regeneration. There are many different solutions with different combinations of acids that are used to address a variety of skin conditions. Common acids utilized are Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) which are naturally occurring substances derived from foods. For example, lactic acid is found in sour milk and malic acid is found in apples and pears. They exfoliate the skin by loosening the surface layers. AHAs are useful for the treatment of uneven skin tone, scarring, hyperpigmentation, and acne.  BHA is also known as salicylic acid. While AHAs work to loosen the surface layers of the skin, BHA works to penetrate the pores of the skin and dissolve the oil, dirt, and debris in them. This makes BHA effective for fighting acne, oily skin, and other skin irritations.

Benefits

Chemical peels are great to rejuvenate your skin by promoting skin cell turnover. Chemical peels can be customized to accommodate any type of skin, including sensitive skin, making the procedure safe for most skin types.

There are many benefits of chemical peels which include:

Treatment

A chemical peel treatment begins with cleansing the skin to leave a clean canvas for the ingredients to penetrate the skin. The peel solution is then applied to the skin and left for a chosen amount of time in order to permeate the skin layers to the desired layer. The peel is completed by neutralization of the peel solution.

Recovery

Depending on the depth of your chemical peel, the aftercare and recovery steps may vary from patient to patient. More gentle peels allow patients to quickly return to their regular routine while deeper peels more require more of a downtime in recovery. After a peel, skin layers will peel off gradually, revealing fresh new skin cells that are free of imperfections.

Post-treatment:

How often should you get a Chemical Peel?

For most people, this treatment should be done once a month to continue to see the best results. For those with sensitive skin, we may recommend that you space your appointments 6 weeks apart. Your aesthetician will help you determine the right amount of time you should place between appointments.

Can You Combine This Treatment With Another?

Yes! At our office, we recommend combining this treatment with any of our treatment facials or – even better – dermaplaning.
